► Surface layer, ionic strength and pH have strong effect on NCs deposition process. ► Surface charges enable adsorption at acidic pH regardless ionic strength. ► Deposition at higher pH strongly depends on salt concentration. ► The Debye length becomes thinner at the high ionic strength. ► The particle can approach the surface close enough that deposition can take place.

► It presents a systematic study of PL emission of Si nanocrystals from Si/SiO multilayered structures; ► The result shows that the PL intensity is determined by both the amount of doping of Si and the distribution of Si as well; ► Also it shows that the PL intensity of Si nanocrystals from the multilayered structure can be significantly greater than the sample prepared by co-evaporation of Si and SiO at the same optimized Si to O ratio. ► This work demonstrate a proper approach to modulate the excess Si amount via multilayered Si/SiO structure to optimize the PL emission of Si.

► ► CrAlN/AlON nanomultilayers with different AlON layer thickness were synthesized by reactive sputtering first time. The microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated by XRD, HRTEM, SEM and nano-indentation. ► Under the template effect of NaCl structural CrAlN layers, amorphous AlON was forced to crystallize and grew epitaxially with CrAlN layers when AlON layer thickness was below 0.9 nm. ► The maximum hardness could reach 34.7 GPa when AlON layer thickness was 0.9 nm and The strengthen mechanism was explained.
