►In this study we evaluate the distribution of the mechanical properties in WC–12Co sprayed coatings using nanoindentation. ►The nanohardness and Young's modulus were identified for each phase. ►The relative volume of binder phase governs the possible hardening effect of the arising hardest phases (W2C and Co + W + C solid solution). ►The proposed analysis procedure is available for other composite materials that contain a mixture of constituent phases.
