A direct, one step route to synthesize nanoporous crystalline metal oxides has been developed through the self assembly of phloroglucinol-formaldehyde resol and tri-block copolymer templates.

► One step synthesis route was developed for crystalline nanoporous metal oxides. ► Phloroglucinol was found to be an excellent carbon source for their synthesis. ► Commercially available tri-block copolymers were used as structure directing agents. ► Hydrogen bonding plays a key role for the synthesis of nanoporous metal oxides. ► Variety of nanoporous metal oxides and mixed metal oxides can be prepared.

Highlights

ZnS and Eu-doped ZnS nanowires were grown by using CVD method. Two distinctive photoluminescence emission peaks were observed from both samples. These peaks are identified as surface related and dopant related peaks and they show different thermal quenching behavior.

► H2O show either chemi-adsorption or dissociation on the surfaces of ZnO nanoclusters, depending on the stability of the clusters and the direction of approach. It was found that some properties of the clusters like the band gap and excitation energies do not change significantly as a result of H2O adsorption, while new IR frequency bands appear in the spectrum.

Second, the other sides of nanoparticles were coated with alkanethiols by immersing nanoparticle films into alkanethiol organic solution after transferring them onto glass substrates.
