17.Effect of subsurface boron on photoluminescence from silicon nanocrystals   Original Research Article
Surface Science, In Press, Accepted Manuscript, Available online 26 January 2011
Navneethakrishnan Salivati, Nimrod Shuall, Joseph M. McCrate, John G. Ekerdt

Research Highlights

►We report the effect of boron doping of silicon nanocrystals on the adsorption of deuterium and the effect subsurface boron has on the deuterium desorption characteristics and on photoluminescence from a fully-passivated nanocrystal. Hot wire chemical vapor deposition is used to deposit the nanocrystals and the hot wire filament is used to dissociated D2 and B2D6 under UHV conditions. Deuterium passivates the dangling bonds and unreconstructs the Si-Si surface dimer bonds. By analogy to hydrogen (deuterium) chemistry on Si(100), the boron is reasoned to backbond with the silicon surface atoms and the next layer of silicon. The subsurface boron likely enhances nonradiative Auger recombination leading to photoluminescence quenching.
