Graphical abstract

The separation between the double wall carbon nanotube cantilever beam tip at potential ψ1 and the substrate at potential -ψ1 as a function of ψ1 with various values of bulk ion concentration.

Highlights

► A double wall carbon nanotube was subjected to electric, osmotic, and van der Waals forces. ► Finite element analysis predicts that the sum of the electric and osmotic forces can be either repulsive or attractive. ► The nanotube deflection is not a monotonic function of the applied surface potentials, the bulk ion concentration, or the initial separation between the nanotube and the substrate. ► The pull-in voltage increases as the bulk ion concentration increases.

4.Loss reduction in silicon nanophotonic waveguide micro-bends through etch profile improvement   Original Research Article
Optics Communications, In Press, Uncorrected Proof, Available online 13 January 2011
Shankar Kumar Selvaraja, Wim Bogaerts, Dries Van Thourhout

Research Highlights

► Micro-bend of silicon photonic wire waveguide is the key for compact photonic circuits. ► Power losses in the bend waveguides are undesirable for many applications. One of the main causes of this loss is polarization conversion/cross-talk between TE and TM modes in the bend, which is mainly caused by the cross-section of the photonic wire waveguide. ► In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate that the bend loss can be reduced as much as 25% by improving the waveguide profile. We provide detailed fabrication technology behind this improvement.

Graphical abstract

Electrostatic-driven positioning of gold nanoparticles was achieved in one-step during the spontaneous phase inversion of PS-b-P2VP copolymer micelles into nanorings templates. Gold arrays with tunable dimensions were produced.

Research highlights

► Single gold nanoparticles are guided at predetermined positions onto silicon surfaces using a simple self-assembly process. ► Gold arrays with controlled densities and periodicities are produced. ► The positioning method can be used for controlling the assembly of a large variety of nanoscale building blocks onto large scale surfaces.

Graphical abstract

A novel homogenous porous layer of magnetite nano-particles (< 4 nm) was synthesized on modified charcoal granular activated carbon for extremely high efficiency of phosphate adsorption

Research highlights

► A novel nano-sized magnetite impregnated charcoal granular activated carbon (nFe-GAC) was developed for phosphate removal from aqueous solutions. To the best of our knowledge disclosure of such a single component porous layer of uniform iron oxide (magnetite) with unique adsorption properties was not reported before. ► A comprehensive characterization of the nFe-GAC was conducted using advanced analytical methods (such as; HR-SEM and Mössbauer spectroscopy), revealing homogenous porous layer of magnetite nano-particles (< 4 nm) immobilized onto the GAC. ► A proposed mechanism for the modification and formation of magnetite onto the GAC is specified. ► The synthesized magnetite layer showed remarkable adsorption capacity of 435 mg PO4/g Fe, which is higher by at least two orders of magnitude as compared with other adsorbents used for phosphate removal. ► A detailed kinetics analysis indicated a pseudo-second order adsorption reaction governed by diffusion within the nano-metric porous magnetite layer. ► Innovative correlation of the diffusion mechanism with the adsorption characteristics of the synthesized adsorbent is presented.
