2.Synthesis of nanorods and mixed shaped copper ferrite and their applications as liquefied petroleum gas sensor   Original Research Article
Applied Surface Science, In Press, Accepted Manuscript, Available online 28 July 2011
Satyendra Singh, B.C. Yadav, Rajiv Prakash, Bharat Bajaj, Jae Rock lee

Highlights

► ► Nanocubes/nanospheres and nanorods of copper ferrite were synthesized via co-precipitation method and characterized for their optical, structural and surface morphological properties ► The influence of the surface morphology on the LPG sensing properties of copper ferrite was investigated ► The role of PEG polymer in the synthesis for obtaining uniform sphericals/nanocubes like surface morphology was also demonstrated. Appreciable changes in resistance of nanosized CuFe2O4 upon exposure to LPG in ambient atmosphere recognized nanocubes as a LPG sensor ► It was observed that the CuFe2O4 nanocubes had an improved sensing performance in comparison with that of the CuFe2O4 nanorods ► The sensitivity of these sensing elements to LPG was found better than our previously reported work. Thus, the present study not only explored the possibility of making use of CuFe2O4 nanocubes/sphericals for LPG sensing at room temperature but also effects of surface morphology and the versatility of PEG to yield nanocubes/sphericals copper ferrite

The photocatalytic performances of as-synthesized ZnO balls are found to be better than the commercially available TiO2-UV-100.

Highlights

7.Resonance scattering amplification assay of biomolecules based on the biomineralization of gold nanoparticles bioconjugates   Original Research Article
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, In Press, Accepted Manuscript, Available online 28 July 2011
Zhao Liu, Lin Luo, Yanhua Dong, Guojun Weng, Jianjun Li

Graphical abstract

The AuNPs-BSA bioconjugates regrow in the NH2OH·HCl-HAuCl4 system. Different volume of AuNPs bioconjugates were added to the redox system with a fixed ratio of HAuCl4 and NH4OH·HCl. The system was applied to enlarge the size of AuNPs. Then the RLS intensity was measured as a function of the bioconjugates concentration. Au3+ was reduced to Au and selectively amplified the RLS signal of the AuNPs-BSA bioconjugates. Whereas the size of uncapped AuNPs was not enlarged, of which the RLS signal remains comparatively negligible low level (1/422 to the peak of AuNPs-BSA). Thus the interference produced by uncapped AuNPs was comparatively diminished. As shown in Fig. 8, the RLS peak intensity increased gradually with the increasing volume of bioconjugates. Resonance scattering spectrum of the secondary growth product has peaks at 542nm, 584nm and 648nm. As reported before, the peak intensity at 584nm reflects the system. Thus the peak at 584nm was used as the determination signal. As showed in the embedded figure, the RLS peak intensity at 584nm increase linearly with the increase of bioconjugates ranged from 40nmol L-1 to 240nmol L-1.

Highlights

► We establish a novel method for the quantitative analysis of trace protein. ► AuNPs were used as detection label. ► Resonance scattering spectra (RLS) peaks serve as determination signal. ► The principle of biomineralation was used to selectively intensify the RLS signal.

23.A continuous-state Markov model for age- and state-dependent degradation processes   Original Research Article
Structural Safety, In Press, Corrected Proof, Available online 22 July 2011
Maurizio Guida, Gianpaolo Pulcini

Highlights

► We propose a continuous-state discrete-time Markov model degradation processes. ► Time and age are both assumed to affect degradation growth. ► We approximate the true transition density through Pearson family of distributions. ► The moments of the true transition density are approximated via the delta method. ► The presence of random effects can also be assumed.

Highlights

► An adaptive dynamic quadrature demodulation is proposed for ultrasound imaging. ► The proposed method employs the 2nd-order autoregressive model. ► The performances were evaluated through in vitro and in vivo experiments. ► The proposed method improved SNR by maximally 7.8 dB and contrast resolution by at least 6.8%.
