Highlights

► The work described in this manuscript represents a significant new advance in identifying and correlating features in vibrational spectra to atomic scale compositional ordering in Ag-Cu-Ni ternary alloy nanoclusters. ► We demonstrate that the phonon spectra obtained from molecular dynamics simulations of single metals as well as their bimetallic and ternary alloy nanocluster can be used to obtain new insights into the atomic scale distribution in the nanoclusters, their microstructure and dynamical properties. ► Detailed structural analyses are carried out to accurately quantify the compositional and microstructural variation in ternary alloy nanoclusters which are then correlated with the features observed in the calculated phonon spectra. The structures were obtained from energy minimization using Monte Carlo simulation. ► Atomic scale characterization of chemical ordering, compositional distribution and microstructure such as that discussed in the present work is of tremendous importance for applications such as catalysis which is primarily dominated by processes occurring at surface or subsurface layers.

Single-electron shuttle based on a silicon quantum dot
K. W. Chan, M. Möttönen, A. Kemppinen, N. S. Lai, K. Y. Tan, W. H. Lim, and A. S. Dzurak

The authors report on single-electron shuttling experiments with a silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor quantum dot at 300 mK. The observed results are explained by a sequential tunneling model, which suggests that the electron gas may be heated substantially by the ac driving voltage.

High-performance and room-temperature-processed nanofloating gate memory devices based on top-gate transparent thin-film transistors
Il-Suk Kang, Young-Su Kim, Hyun-Sang Seo, Se Wan Son, Eun Ae Yoon, Seung-Ki Joo, and Chi Won Ahn

In this report, the top-gate ZnO TFT-based nanofloating gate memory devices were fabricated and characterized. It was revealed that although the top-gate device had low ON-state characteristics, it had high nonvolatile memory characteristics. This reprot has a potential for fabrication of high-performance and high-reliability nonvolatile memory devices on flexible substrates because the whole device processes including the synthesis of charge-trapping layer are based on low-temperature processes.

Shrinking an arbitrary object as one desires using metamaterials
Wei Xiang Jiang, Tie Jun Cui, Xin Mi Yang, Hui Feng Ma, and Qiang Cheng

The authors report a fabricated and measured shrinking device, which can transform an arbitrary object to another virtual smaller object with the desired size and material parameters. It is also interesting that the illusion device can generate a virtual object with extreme parameters, which does not exist in nature. Metamaterials are used to realize the shrinking device.
